Mechatronics Engineering 2025

Sahil Kale
Hey, I’m Sahil – I’m a second year Mechatronics Engineering student that loves airplanes and starting random food debates!

Waterloo Engineering in one word:

I choose Waterloo Engineering because:

Mechatronics sounded cool! Waterloo’s Mechatronics program is one of the best in Canada, and it offered me the opportunity to explore the intersection of hardware, software, and mechanical engineering. It also gave me a chance to figure out which among those I was most interested in.

The best thing about my program is:

The people! While the learning opportunities are up there, my classmates have become a huge part of my life. It’s a rare opportunity to meet new people with diverse backgrounds and genuinely connect with them. Everyone I’ve met is extremely supportive and passionate about what they do.

About my Co-op experience:

At the moment, I am working on the Tesla Bot as a robotics intern! Previously, I worked at companies where I wrote code for electric helicopters and developed software for a wireless stethoscope. My goal is to specialize in the niche area of embedded systems, where software and electrical engineering intersect.

I wish I had known before I came:

The quote “Don’t chase success, pursue excellence and success will follow you” is very true. Have fun, try your best, and strive to excel.

Outside the classroom, I’m involved with:

A bunch of things! Here’s the highlights

  • Waterloo Aerial Robotics Group’s Team Lead (check it out ;)
  • WEEF Board Member
  • Volunteer Intro Pilot at my gliding club
  • University of Calgary Robotics Club Mentor
  • Organizing events for my class (such as an epic bonfire)

A fun project I’ve completed:

I made a Mars Rover chassis control system that tethered via open Wi-Fi networks… and promptly used it to scare geese away. Might be worth selling to Waterloo?

One more thing about me:

I got my pilot’s licence before my driver’s licence!
