Systems Design Engineering 2027
Shub Mano

Introduce yourself briefly:

Hello! My name is Shub Mano and I just finished my 1A term of Systems Design Engineering

Waterloo Engineering in one word:

Innovative

I choose Waterloo Engineering because:

I chose Waterloo Engineering because of the strong coop program, tight-knit community as well as the plethora of multidisciplinary opportunities.

The best thing about my program is:

SYDE is known to provide a holistic view of engineering as a whole. I love that I am able to explore different aspects of engineering; truly exploring my strengths and interests as an individual and student. It also fosters an entrepreneurial mindset, and its exclusivity to the University of Waterloo really sealed the deal when considering post-secondary pathways.

About my Co-op experience:

I am presently a Product Manager Intern at a company called August Digital for Winter 2023. Thus far, some of my responsibilities are inclusive of JIRA management, creating user stories & conducting extensive market research. There was originally a huge learning curve; however, I had the support from my co-workers and managers, who were able to lend a hand whenever I needed it.

I wish I had known before I came:

Balance is the key to success. I knew that the workload and assessments would become more difficult than high school, but I didn’t realize the transition to post-secondary would be more difficult than I imagined. I wish I knew how to manage my time better. Having a defined-routine will go a long way in terms of productivity and also keeping your mental health in check. Make sure you take time to wind-off and cool, but not too much time that it starts to cause a backlog in your assignment submissions.

Outside the classroom, I’m involved with:

Outside of the classroom, I’m involved in various activities on campus. I am the academic representative of the SYDE ‘27 cohort; responsible for clear communication between my peers, professors & admin on matters that need attention. I’ve also participated in the UW ProdCon competition and placed second along with my teammates. Other commitments that I’m involved with include Watonomous, SYDE Soc, & more.

A fun project I’ve completed:

A fun project I’ve completed was a solo-pitch of a potential product that utilizes AI to scrape contacts and then compiling them into a data-set in which could be automatically uploaded into CRM spreadsheets for different companies. It would allow business development and sales leaders to find leads and add their contacts to their lists with a click of a button.

One more thing about me:

I am an aspiring traveller. I’m looking forward to all of the trips I will be taking throughout my degree. Some places on my bucket-list are Paris, Tokyo, Singapore, & Barcelona.
