LOCATION:PSE - Pearl Sullivan Engineering Building 200 University Ave West
 Waterloo ON N2L 3G1 Canada
SUMMARY:Storytelling to Promote Technical Literacy
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Led by Prof Emeritus Gordon Stubley and Veronica Stephenson\n\n
This workshop will demonstrate how the creative art of storytelling\ncan u
sed to engage low technical literacy audiences with technical and\nprofess
ional practice concepts. The workshop will use three original\noral storie
 s\, _The Fifty-Nine Story Crisis_\,  _Bridging for Bridges_\,\nand _Chasi
ng the Sun_\, to illustrate how three literary strategies:\nchange of pers
pective\, use of suspense\, and use of the quest\nstoryline\, can be used
to insert technical and professional practice\nconcepts into traditional o
ral storytelling. Reflection/discussion\nactivities will encourage partici
pants to identify how these literary\nstrategies impact audience engagemen
 t. Besides being able to identify\nthe three literary strategies it is hop
ed that participants rediscover\nthe wonder of story and are motivated to
consider integrating oral\nstorytelling into their professional teaching p
ractice.\n\nThe workshop assumes no previous experience in storytelling. W
hile\nstorytelling skill will not be developed in the workshop\, links to\
nresources for developing storytelling craft will be provided.\n\nNote tha
t this workshop is very similar to the workshop delivered at\nCEEA-ACÉG 2
026 (Moncton NB) in June 2026 and one of the stories\, _The\nFifty-Nine St
ory Crisis\,_ was presented at the Turkstra Talks speaker\nseries in July
2026.\n\nIn retirement\, Gordon joined the Baden Storytellers’ Guild in
Fall\n2021. Since then\, he has drawn upon personal anecdotes\, engineerin
g\ncase studies\, and traditional folk tales to regularly contribute to\nt
he Guild’s monthly Stories Aloud events and annual World\nStorytelling D
ay concerts. He has also told at the Guelph Guild of\nStorytellers’ Tea
 ’N’Tales summer concert series\, Button Factory\nArts Centre’s Bloom
and Grow Open House\, and the Queen-Margaret\nNeighbourhood Fair.

SUMMARY:Generative AI as an Assessment Design Tool
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Led by Prof Ken McKay\n\nThis two-hour workshop introduces gene
rative AI as a practical tool\nfor designing courses around essential them
 es\, learning outcomes\,\ncompetency levels\, and assessments. Participant
s will practice with\ntheir own course materials and leave with a competen
cy-focused course\ndesign roadmap\, starter prompts for each stage of cour
 se and\nassessment development\, draft themes and outcomes\, including a f
irst\ndraft of an assessment item or a review of an existing assessment.\n
Participants will be invited to join the AI and Teaching Practice\nchannel
for access to additional resources.\n\nActivities: Two hands-on exercises
of approximately 25 minutes each\,\nfollowed by break-out discussion. All
prompts and examples provided as\nWord documents.\n\nWhat to bring:\n\n*\
nAccess to an AI tool (for example\, Copilot).\n\n *\nYour course outline\
, with its learning outcomes.\n\n *\nThe topic of one upcoming lecture.\n\
n *\nOne existing assessment with its marking scheme: an assignment\, a\nm
 idterm or a final.
