ALUMNI SPEAKER SERIES
"Engineering solutions to global health problems"

Join Elaine Gómez as she will describe the importance of representation in games and digital media. She will speak to how gaming has the power to destroy the perpetuation of stereotypical perceptions and will explain how games can be designed to create social impact in meaningful ways.
This event is part of the “ADE for Game Communities: Enculturing Anti-Racism, Decolonization, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (ADE) in Games Research and Creation” series from the ADE Committee of the Games Institute, University of Waterloo, and is supported in part by funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Are you looking for opportunities to reflect and learn more about Black talent in the workforce?
Join the ‘Elevating Black excellence in the workplace’ panel discussion on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, from 12-1 p.m. The event is hosted by Co-operative and Experiential Education (CEE) at the University of Waterloo, a global leader in work-integrated learning.

As part of the Water Institute's WaterTalks lecture series, Dr. Giuliano Di Baldassarre, Professor, Department of Earth Sciences & Principal Investigator HydroSocialExtremes, Uppsala University, Sweden will present: Droughts in a human-dominated world: Feedbacks, legacies and inequalities.

Are you interested in hearing insights on strategic advising, executive management or career advice from a C-Suite level executive? WatSolve Consulting Group is hosting our termly C-Suite Fireside Chat featuring Rina Carlini from Optimal Innovation Group, who will be speaking about her company, career, life lessons, and challenges that she’s faced along the way. Please join us in-person or on Zoom for a discussion on the current state of the agricultural ammonia market, the pressure for green ammonia solutions, and the demand for independent hydrogen production at the farm level. The focus will also be on the needs analysis in the rural and remote communities and the obstacles faced, including supply chain and resource challenges.

The Student Experience Survey is a survey the goes out every fall and winter semester to gage the student learning experience at the University of Waterloo. Only 10,000 students are invited, check your @uwaterloo email or LEARN on Feb 13 to see if you have been invited this term. Students who submit their surveys will receive $5 on their WatCards. Visit the Institutional Analysis and Planning (IAP) website for more information.

Join us for Quantum Today, where we sit down with researchers from the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) to talk about their work, its impact and where their research may lead.
Materials that absorb many different colours of light efficiently are essential to build powerful optical sensors, with applications in health care, precision imaging, quantum communication, and more. By carefully designing an array of semiconductor nanowires, IQC researchers have built a metamaterial that efficiently absorbs light across a wide range of colours where common sensors often fail. In this instalment of Quantum Today, Professor Michael Reimer and Dr. Sasan V. Grayli from IQC and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering discuss their recent result and how it may be used in future technologies.
Find their publication, titled “Semiconductor nanowire metamaterial for broadband near-unity absorption” in Scientific Reports and on the arXiv.

In Honour of Andrew Levitt, celebrating the legacy of a Professor Emeritus dedicated to teaching on care, and with care.
Please join us for Cultural Districts, the lecture will be held from 6:30pm - 8:00pm in the Main Lecture Hall at the Waterloo School of Architecture.
The lecture will be feature panelists Tura Cousins Wilson, SOCA, Cheryll Case, CP Planning and moderator: Linda Zhang, Waterloo Architecture.
This is the second in a series of five lectures on the topic of maintenance.
Praxes of Care asks, “what is an architecture of care?” Over four terms–Fall 2021 to Winter 2023–a series of conversations will bring together two or more architects, designers, researchers, artists, activists, and care workers to discuss care processes according to the themes of Attention, Action, Communication, and Maintenance. The series is curated by faculty, staff, and representatives of student groups: Treaty Lands Global Stories, Bridge, and the Sustainability Collective. Recent calls for change have shifted the discipline toward the underlying social and ecological processes enabled by the production of architecture. By listening to and learning about care practices from interdisciplinary perspectives, we can begin to reshape the discipline of architecture into a form of care.

Note: This event is only for first year International Engineering students.
The Centre for Career Action is facilitating consults in January 2023 to understand the experiences of students enrolled in the International Engineering Co-op Bootcamp. During the consults, we are interested in learning about how you navigated your first year of university as an international Engineering student, in-relation to co-op. We want to learn how we can improve the Bootcamp program for future prospective students. Whether you participated in the Bootcamp or not, your responses are vital to us as we work to create improved resources for other first year international Engineering students like you!
The study will take approximately 1 hour to complete. If selected, we will confirm the time of your session with you. After attending and participating in the consult, $15 will be added to your WatCard.
We will be facilitating both virtual and in-person consults, please complete the registration form to indicate your availability in January 2023. In-person consultations will be held in the Tatham Centre. If you are selected, we will send confirmation emails with more details.
