SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Seminar Series featuring Dr. Gregory\nStephan
opoulos\, W.H. Dow Professor MIT: Can biotechnology deliver cost\neffectiv
e liquid fuels from renewable feedstocks?
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:The importance of liquid fuels in transportation is well establ
ished\,\nyet\, there are presently no viable options for their cost-effect
ive\nproduction from renewable feedstocks.  During the past 15 years we\n
have been developing in my lab a system for the conversion of gas\nmixture
s of hydrogen (or CO) and CO2 to oils or alkanes. The two-stage\nsystem co
mprises anaerobic fixation of CO2 and conversion of the CO2\nfixation prod
uct (for example\, acetate) to lipids\, from which\nbiodiesel can be produ
ced. In another application\, the CO2 fixation\nproduct is converted to al
kanes. Our work includes both the\nengineering of the microbes and develop
ment of a process to achieve\ngas to liquid conversion in prototype system
 s. These systems are\nscalable\, make no use of land (beyond what is neede
d for generating\nrenewable electricity for hydrogen production)\, do not
compete with\nfood and are cost competitive based on high level cost analy
sis. I\nwill present the essential features of this process in my talk\; f
ull\ndetails can be found in the 5 papers cited.
