SUMMARY:The Psychology of Fun and Frustration
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:An enduring appeal of interactive entertainment media such as v
ideo\ngames is that they invite the user to co-create the on-screen\nexper
ience. More than an invitation\, these experiences demand\nnear-constant a
ttention from players—and do so on myriad dimensions\,\nincluding cognit
ive (problem-solving)\, emotional (affective\nreactions)\, apparatus (cont
rol or interface intuitiveness)\, exertional\n(physical activity) and soci
al (attending to social agents).\nIndividually and combined\, these source
s of demand are mediators for\nunderstanding the relationship between form
al features of interactive\nmedia and intended (or unintended) outcomes of
usage.\n\nThis presentation will present and review an interactivity-as-d
emand\nmodel based on prior and ongoing research into video games and virt
ual\nreality technologies\, with specific implications for game design and
\nplayer psychology.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Nick Bowman (PhD\, Michigan State Uni
versity) is an\nAssociate Professor of Emerging Media at the S.I. Newhouse
School of\nPublic Communications at Syracuse University. His research foc
uses on\nthe uses and effects of interactive and immersive media\, with sp
ecific\ninterests in social media\, video games\, and metaverse technologi
es. He\nhas published more than\n\n125 peer-reviewed manuscripts and co-au
thored more than 200\ncompetitively selected conference presentations. He
is the editor of\nJournal of Media Psychology and associate editor for Tec
hnology\, Mind\,\nand Behavior. Recently\, he completed a term as the Fulb
right Taiwan Wu\nJing-Jyi Arts & Culture Fellow and the National Chengchi
University in\nTaipei\, where he was researching the cognitive\, emotional
\, physical\,\nand social demands of virtual reality experiences\, includi
ng video\ngaming and digital advertising campaigns. He is a lifelong gamer
\,\npart-time mechanic\, and an excited-yet-skeptical futurist.
