SUMMARY:Workshop: History and Culture through Traditional Games

DESCRIPTION:This workshop hosted by Dallas Squire of Onkwehonwe Games offer
 s\nparticipants the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of\
 nthe people of the Six Nations (also called Haudenosaunee) through\nTradit
 ional Games.\n\nInteractive and hands-on\, their approach to teaching is i
 ndigenous in\nits foundation. While learning about traditional games of th
 e Six\nNations of the Grand River\, participants will simultaneously be\nl
 earning about and experiencing local First Nations culture. In\nKanyen'keh
 a Onkwehonwe translates to ‘the original or first\npeople’. The tradit
 ional way of many Onkwehonwe is to live in\nharmony with Mother Earth. Liv
 ing in this good way requires a balance\nof physical\, mental\, emotional 
 and spiritual health. Games were and\nare still used as a way to stay heal
 thy and connected to a person’s\ncommunity. Six Nations traditional game
 s are used to enhance\nindividual and team skills\, as well as create spor
 tsmanship\,\nconnection and laughter.\n\nThis event is part of the “ADE 
 for Game Communities: Enculturing\nAnti-Racism\, Decolonization\, Equity\,
  Diversity and Inclusion (ADE) in\nGames Research and Creation” series f
 rom the ADE Committee of the\nGames Institute\, University of Waterloo\, a
 nd is supported in part by\nfunding from the Social Sciences and Humanitie
 s Research Council.
