Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) Logo
The Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) is a 24‐hour intensive workshop designed to give instructors the opportunity to make significant improvements in lecture design and delivery.

Each instructor will work in a small group with four other engineering instructors, with facilitation by Gordon Stubley (Associate Dean, Teaching; Professor, MME) and Robert Sproule (ISW Facilitator; Lecturer, SAF). In this setting, instructors will have the chance to practise designing meaningful learning activities within outcome‐aligned lesson plans, delivering lessons that promote student engagement, assessing student learning and receiving feedback. The workshop has proven beneficial to instructors with all levels of experience and success.

Designing and conducting three mini-lessons

Much of the learning in this workshop will occur through designing and conducting three mini‐lessons, receiving verbal and written feedback from group participants who will have served as students in your mini‐lesson, and reviewing a video of your mini‐lesson. There will also be sessions covering topics such as elements of good teaching, setting objectives, assessment strategies, student learning styles, teaching models and collaborative activity. All of the activities will be designed to reflect the teaching and learning culture in Waterloo Engineering.

This event is open to anyone instructing in Waterloo Engineering. The workshop runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, and participants must attend all four days. Due to the limited capacity (maximum 5 participants), we may not be able to accept all those interested in this offering. However, if there is sufficient demand, we will offer the workshop again in fall 2014. If interested in participating in this workshop, contact Kathy Becker as soon as possible.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
