Awards in Engineering for Faculty Members

Distinguished Performance Awards

Distinguished Performance Awards honour outstanding, well-rounded faculty members.  Winners are those with exceptional overall merit ratings, who have also made some significant contribution through their research, teaching, or service.  Each department offers awards for distinguished performance, with input from the dean and from the Academic Policy Committee.

Teaching Excellence Awards

The Teaching Excellence Awards honour faculty members with a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching.  The committee also considers activities beyond the classroom, such as course development, student guidance, and student project supervision. The Award provides for the support of two Undergraduate Research Assistantships to assist recipients in their research work.  Each department makes one nomination for these awards, and three winners are chosen by the Chairs and Associate Deans committee.

Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision

The Faculty of Engineering Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision award recognizes exemplary faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in graduate student supervision. Normally three faculty members will be recognized with this award annually. Awardees will receive a one-time stipend of $2,500 and will be recognized at the annual Faculty of Engineering Faculty and Staff Awards Dinner. They will also be nominated for consideration for the University of Waterloo Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision.

Nominations for the Faculty of Engineering Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision are collected each Fall through the University of Waterloo Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision nomination process.

Engineering Research Excellence Awards

The Engineering Research Excellence Awards (EREA) are presented each year to tenure or tenure-track faculty members in the Faculty of Engineering in recognition of outstanding research accomplishments. The recipient of the award will be selected on a competitive basis and judged by a panel of faculty members consisting of one member from each Engineering department, including Architecture.  Faculty members nominated for the EREA award are not eligible to serve on the review committee.  Previous winners of the EREA are ineligible for re-nomination for at least three years following receipt of their prior award.

Engineering Society Teaching Excellence Award

This award was established in fall 2014 by the Engineering Student Society. Nominations are put forward by undergraduate students, and nominees are assessed against the criteria listed below:

  • Application of non-conventional teaching techniques
  • Integration of experiential learning opportunities
  • Commitment and dedication to ensuring the academic success of their students
