Top robotics researcher coming to Waterloo from UK

A leading international researcher is joining Waterloo Engineering as part of a federal initiative to attract top-tier scientists and scholars to do groundbreaking work in Canada.

Kerstin Dautenhahn, one of the founders of the field of social robotics, was announced today as a Canada 150 Research Chair with funding for the next seven years.

Waterloo partners with Tsinghua University on research collaboration centre

The University of Waterloo is partnering Tsinghua University in Beijing, China on a research collaboration centre that will advance science in the areas of nanotechnology, energy, and pollution control.

The centre—known as Tsinghua University – University of Waterloo Joint Research Centre for Micro/Nano Energy & Environment Technology—officially opened on March 29.

Engineers make their mark at the Velocity Fund Finals

Startups with ties to Waterloo Engineering figured prominently again today with $130,000 in funding up for grabs at the Velocity Fund Finals.

They took three of four $25,000 awards, plus a $10,000 bonus for top hardware company, as well of two of four $5,000 prizes for early stage startups.

Esch winners set their sights on 'changing the world'

A sense of purpose trumped flat-out fun when four mechatronics engineering students finally settled on a project to cap their undergraduate years at the University of Waterloo.

Now they have confirmation it was the right way to go.

John Curticapean, Ben Hudson, Tony Qu and Malcolm Williams took one of six $10,000 prizes this week as student startups pitched their business ideas at the Esch Entrepreneurship Capstone Design Awards competition.
