Alumnus company Solink raises $23 million in funding

A video security and data analytics software firm started by a Waterloo Engineering alumnus has secured $23 million in funding to help fuel its growth.

Solink, which is based in Ottawa and has about 80 employees, was co-founded in 2009 by electrical engineering graduate Mike Matta, now the chief executive officer.

Prof made key contributions at Waterloo and beyond

A long-time former professor, department chair and associate dean at Waterloo Engineering is being remembered for his many contributions to his profession, the University of Waterloo, the Province of Ontario and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.

Thomas Brzustowski, who joined the Faculty as a mechanical engineering professor in 1962, died June 19 after a brief illness.

New student starting school with $70K scholarship

A second incoming student at Waterloo Engineering has landed a four-year, $70,000 scholarship from the TD Scholarships for Community Leadership program.

Jocelyne Murphy of Waterloo joins Chinemerem Chigbo of Winnipeg among 20 cross-country winners recognized for outstanding contributions to change in their communities.

Palihapitiya urges new graduates to change the world

Celebrated alumnus Chamath Palihapitiya urged graduates at the recent Waterloo Engineering virtual convocation to seize the moment in tumultuous times and change the world for the better.

In a nearly eight-minute video address, the former Facebook executive and Social Capital founder said it is up to young people to finally fix the systemic racism and injustice that have sparked protests around the world.

Engineering student earns Velocity startup investment

A startup company co-founded by a Waterloo Engineering student was one of four winners at the recent Velocity Fund Pitch Competition.

Philip Scott, who is studying software engineering, is CEO of Tutturu.tv, which helps people have meaningful social experiences in a remote world via virtual browsing.

“Forget about downloading apps or signing up for accounts,” he said in a pitch that earned the startup a $50,000 pre-seed investment.
