AMC at Waterloo is advancing industry-focused research

The Ontario Advanced Manufacturing Consortium (AMC), a joint partnership between McMaster University, University of Waterloo, and Western University, is helping to accelerate industry adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies, which will create jobs and strengthen the province’s reputation as a leading manufacturing region.

Since AMC was launched in April 2017, nearly 100 companies have benefited from the advanced manufacturing experts and state-of-the-art facilities at Waterloo.

Waterloo alumnus donates $25 million to help transform education and research

A University of Waterloo alumnus who is a successful venture capitalist and part owner of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors has donated $25 million towards Engineering 7, the University’s newest building that officially opened today.

E7 opens with a bang, a reveal and a special delivery

Chamath Palihapitiya kept it light but heartfelt when he was announced today as the largest private donor to the new Engineering 7 (E7) building as hundreds of people gathered to celebrate its official opening.

A 1999 graduate of Waterloo Engineering who went on to tremendous success in business, Palihapitiya got a laugh when he joked via video clip about not being able to attend the event in person because an injury had forced him to fill in for the Golden State Warriors, the NBA basketball team he partly owns.

Thalmic Labs receives a US $120-million boost

Founder of Thalmic Labs testing the Myo gesture control armband

Thalmic Labs, a company founded by three Waterloo Engineering graduates, announced a series B raise of US $120 million today.

Leading the future of human-computer interaction with its Myo gesture control armband, the company has plans to further build out its workforce in Kitchener-Waterloo and San Francisco, and accelerate development of new technologies and products. 

The investment was led by Intel Capital, the Amazon Alexa Fund and Fidelity Investments Canada.
