The Upstart Festival is a bi-annual one-act play festival presenting original projects from students that can take any form including theatre, dance, poetry, performance art, film installations and augmented reality experiences. This evening of theatre is composed of three new scripts written, developed, directed and designed by students under faculty supervision.

The Rocket Man was adapted by Kelly Hornung from Ray Bradbury's short story of the same title. This play is about family and the dangers of the imagination. Set in an alternative present, where space travel is more frequent and houses are run by advanced technology, The Rocket Man follows a family that has been torn apart by the father’s adventures to space. In adapting this short story for the stage, not only does the dazzling, romantic world of Bradbury's imagination come to life, but so do his characters and the lessons they bring with them.

Out of the Box is a play about imagination, the way it can take us on far off adventures through time and space, or hold us captive with painful memories. The play follows the life of author Avery Corwin who is suffering writer's block as he tries to complete his best-selling book series. Out of the Box asks you to remember a simpler time when imagination was everything and asks what happens when we are forced to grow up.

Phone Book - A young man feels as though life is scripted so he decides the only logical course of action would be to call ten strangers from a pay phone in hopes he might be able to break from his script. Phone Book is a one man show that explores the repetitive nature of our day to day lives
