The following news release was originally published as a press release from Renison University College on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015.
Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston delivered speeches at Renison University College on Friday, October 30, in support of the grand opening of Renison’s newest building.
His Excellency David Johnston said that it was good to be back on campus, and that being in Renison's new building was "uplifting." Her Excellency Sharon Johnston spoke on the important work that was happening at the College, saying, "As an institution that educates future social workers, Renison is close to my heart."
Renison Principal Wendy Fletcher says the new building will support global engagement both on campus and in the community, and provide classrooms space to equip students with linguistic and cultural communication skills. “Global engagement is not an idea for us, it’s a way of life. It’s how we practice education in the classroom, how we live across our disciplinary diversities. This building, in a way, symbolizes our historic and ongoing commitment to that understanding.” The physical space provided by the new building has been critical in accommodating our increasing English language learners; since 2013, enrolment has doubled in our undergraduate English for Multilingual Speakers (EMLS) courses, and we've seen an enrolment increase of 35% in our non-credit English Language Centre (ELC) courses.
Their Excellencies have had ties with Renison for over four decades, and Fletcher says the College has been grateful for the good friendship and mentorship the Governor General has provided over that time, including his time as President of the University of Waterloo. Fletcher is also excited that much of the work Her Excellency Sharon Johnston has produced, including her recent book, Matrons and Madams, supports similar social values that have been foundational at Renison through its Social Work and Social Development Studies programs.
