SUMMARY:Giovanna Riccio\, \"Plasticity's Bombshell\"
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:[Giovanna Riccio]\n\nIn 2019\, the Barbie doll turned 60.  Pla
sticity in body and persona\nallowed the Mattel toy company to position an
 d reposition their\nhigh-achieving money-maker as relevant by exploiting s
ocial trend\,\npolitical movements and historical shifts. As a complex int
ernational\ncelebrity and feminist bête noir\, Barbie is a mirror helping
us to\nreflect on ourselves. \n\nThis lecture is based on my book\, Plas
 tic’s Republic\, a poem\ncollection centering on the Barbie doll as an e
nduring cultural icon.\nI will examine her creation\, her impact on female
beauty and discuss\nhow her mouldable nature made her a “capital doll
 ” and free market\ndiva. Following the book’s themes\, I will elaborat
e the\nphilosophical\, feminist and social issues she engenders and discus
s\nhow Barbie became plastic surgery’s prophet by spawning “plastic\np
ositive” humans. Finally\, plastic’s reach extends to the\ndollificati
on of romantic relationships via silicone sex dolls and\nends (un)naturall
y in our plastic infused lives and smothered oceans.\n\nI will follow the
lecture by reading from Plastic’s Republic.
