Shakespeare 401: What’s Next?

Andy Warhol painting of William Shakespeare.From June 21-24, 2017, Ken Graham and Alysia Kolentsis joined forces with the Stratford Festival to host the second Shakespearean Theatre Conference: “Shakespeare 401: What’s Next?”

The conference included a number of highlights:

  • An impromptu tour of the Festival Archives led by the Festival’s Artistic Director, Antoni Cimolino.
  • “Shakespeare and the Alchemy of Gender,” a one-woman show by Lisa Wolpe, the founding director of the Los Angeles Women’s Shakespeare Company.
  • Roundtable discussions of Timon of Athens and The Changeling, featuring the directors and lead actors from Stratford’s 2017 productions of the plays.

In all 90 speakers addressed such topics as cross-gender and colour-blind casting, Shakespeare in Canada, Shakespeare and jazz, Shakespeare’s digital afterlives, teaching Shakespeare, and global Shakespeare.
