The Shakespearean Theatre Conference: Calls for Papers

Descriptions of the proposed sessions, participant names and instructions on how to answer their calls, including a deadline will be posted here.

The Festive and Unfestive in The Shoemaker's Holiday

Have you directed, taught, read or seen The Shoemaker’s Holiday recently? How, these days, do we understand the play’s competing discourses of class, gender, nationalism, economics, disability, fashion and partying? Talks and discussion topics invited for a mixed panel of theater artists, scholars, and others to explore festivity and festive energies in Dekker’s The Shoemaker’s Holiday. Director Richard Corley will describe the play's production history, with a special emphasis on the Mercury Theatre production, which opened on New Year's Night 1938, under Orson Welles' direction, while Gina Hausknecht will focus on Jane’s exclusion from the festivities. Formal papers welcome as well as interest in serving as a panelist/discussant; if the latter, please propose topics for discussion by panelists and audience. Send proposals of up to 500 words or inquiries to Gina Hausknecht (ghauskne@coe.edu) and Richard Corley (rcorley0523@gmail.com) by January 15, 2019.
