Each year, the Faculty of Environment Awards Banquet brings together student recipients with the generous donors who have contributed to their success.

Panel Discussion

The role of philanthropy in shaping our cities: building a more just, healthy, and sustainable future.

How people live, work, play, and learn is continuously being redefined by innovative thinking and new models of urban planning. In this panel discussion speakers will outline the concept of building just, health and sustainable cities of the future. They will explore the challenges such as climate change and inequality as well as opportunities in technology and cross sector partnerships.

Frank Cairo
Frank Cairo

Co-founder/C.E.O

Frank Cairo is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Caivan Communities and the Advanced Building Innovation Company. Frank is a multidisciplinary entrepreneur who has innovated across several sectors, harnessing advanced manufacturing, software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence and generative design techniques in the optimization of built form and community design.

(BES '20), Honours in Planning

Planner

Jacklyn is a recent graduate of the University of Waterloo Planning program in the Faculty of Environment. She holds her Bachelors in Environmental Studies with an Honors in Planning. During her undergraduate career, Jacklyn was the recipient of the Sheryl Kennedy Global Citizen Internship Award that allowed her to serve as an Assistant Planner with Habitat for Humanity Wellington Dufferin Guelph. In this position, Jacklyn addressed complex issues of housing affordability and adequacy in her hometown of Guelph, Ontario, and became a champion of success for current and future affordable housing projects within the organization. Since graduating in 2020, Jacklyn has accepted a Planner position with the vibrant and growing City of Owen Sound. At the local municipal planning level, Jacklyn is involved in several facets of the planning process including Official Plan review, site and subdivision development, and heritage preservation.


Steve Mennill

Senior Vice President, Chief Climate Officer

Steve holds an M.B.A. from the University of Toronto, a B.E.S. in Urban Planning from the University of Waterloo and a Diploma in Urban Land Economics from the University of British Columbia. He is a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP, RPP), is Certified in Real Estate Finance (CRF) and holds the ICD.D designation.

Steve is also the Senior Vice Precident (SVP) and Chief Climate Officer of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). During his 28 years at CMHC he has held senior leadership roles in risk management, policy, mortgage insurance, affordable housing, research and innovation. Before joining CMHC, Steve worked as an urban planner providing consulting services to land developers and municipalities.


Eldon Theodore
Eldon Theodore

(BSc) Urban Planning, Master's in Urban Design

Partner at MHBC, Council Director

Eldon Theodore is a Partner at MHBC with a dual specialization in planning and urban design where he has been practicing for over 19 years.  Eldon holds an Honours Bachelor Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Waterloo and a Masters in Urban Design Studies from the University of Toronto. He has been trained under the National Charrette Institute System for facilitating community charrettes.

Eldon is also a current Council Director for the Ontario Professional Planner’s Institute and a member of the Design Industry Association of Toronto (DIAC). He sits on the design review panel for the City of Hamilton and the Town of Aurora.Eldon is a full member of the Canadian Institute of Planners, Lamda Alpha International, and a Registered Professional Planner with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute.
