Challenging the Wisdom of Socially Mixed Public Housing Redevelopment

Socially mixed redevelopment is a popular strategy for addressing problems in public housing and considered a best practice in urban planning. This presentation challenges the wisdom of this approach, beginning with a critique of the core ideas that justify revitalization, including the need for poverty deconcentration, social mix, and New Urbanist design. I discuss this in light of research findings from the remaking of Toronto’s Regent Park and Don Mount Court public housing communities. Based on over 100 interviews with tenants and other stakeholders, this work draws on tenant experiences with relocation, redevelopment, and social mix; and their satisfaction with revitalized housing and neighbourhoods.
