GEM students safe following Everest avalanche

In light of the recent avalanche at Mount Everest in Nepal, the Faculty of Environment can reassure family and friends that the students participating in Geography and Environmental Management’s GEOG 430c class trip to Everest are safe and secure.

Despite intermittent Internet and phone connection, the University has received information that the group was approximately eight or nine days trek (60kms) away from Everest base camp when the avalanche struck. Reports indicate that the avalanche did not affect Everest base camp.

Ecology lab launches herbarium database

And Grant vategorizing herbs

Thanks to efforts from the Faculty of Environment’s Ecology Lab to keep the WAT Herbarium on campus, the University of Waterloo will continue to have a collection of dried, pressed and preserved plant specimens available for research, education and teaching purposes.

Experts: Latest IPCC report raises concerns about adapting to new climate reality

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its latest authoritative scientific report on the global consequences of climate change in Yokahama, Japan. 

The report indicates that changes in climate in recent decades have caused impacts on natural and human systems on all continents and across the oceans. The risks of climate change are going to increase substantially as the climate continues to change in the decades ahead, the report’s authors conclude.
