Bereavement Candle Light

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Hin Fung "Kelvin" Sun, a 4A undergraduate student in the Faculty of Environment.

Kelvin and his older brother Jack came to Canada from Hong Kong nine years ago to finish high school and attend university. Jack chose York University, with Kelvin selecting the University of Waterloo's Environment and Business, Honours Co-operative Program.

Kelvin was committed to managing the world's most pressing sustainability challenges, focusing on gender equity and climate change adaptation. In one of his many roles, he acted as Operations Coordinator for the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation (ICCA) — helping communities in Canada equitably prepare for climate-related hazards such as flooding, fire, and extreme heat.

Kelvin was known campus-wide for his tireless service to his fellow students. He volunteered as Chairman of the Board for the Waterloo Environment Students Endowment Fund (WESEF), a student-led organization empowered to raise money to improve the quality of the Faculty of Environment's undergraduate and graduate academic and student life. It was during his tenure that a sheltered bike storage structure was built to encourage sustainable transport.

Almost universally adored, he aided countless students in their time of need as services coordinator, executive social media and marketing director and executive education director for the Glow Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity with WUSA.

Those who knew Kelvin as a scholar described him as "sweet," "an amazing person." Blair Feltmate, Head of the ICCA, said he was, "unbelievably pleasant, enjoyable and productive member of our team," and Jean Andrey, Dean of the Faculty of Environment, found Kelvin to be "principled and constructive."

Our thoughts and support are with Kelvin's family and friends at this time.
