At Environment, you are part of a community, no matter where your exciting career shaping a sustainable future takes you. We have a special interest in reconnecting with all of our 14,448 grads in 85 countries. This month, this commitment took us to Hong Kong.
I’ve travelled all over the world, for pleasure and for work. But I have never felt so welcomed, humbled, and proud to be a part of a community of like-minded, passionate and truly kind group as our Faculty of Environment alumni in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is one of the most amazing, complex and yet simple places in this world. With over 7.3 million residents, the city is planned to flawlessly move its residents around through their fantastic MTR. The city is vibrant with culture, business, and incredible architecture. But what makes Hong Kong so fabulous is its people.
During our trip, we had the absolute honour and pleasure to meet with some of our alumni, meet new friends, have a fun social with a group of Environment alumni, and celebrate the University’s 60th anniversary at the Gala Dinner – which was organized by a group of committed alumni – with over 600 of our UW alumni!
Through our meetings with our alumni, one theme kept coming up – they all are passionate about making a difference in this world – and they are passionate about the environment and their communities. It was interesting walking around Hong Kong and seeing signs in the airport, around town encouraging patrons to be mindful of using water, recycling, and keeping the city clean.
Our alumni’s accomplishments are outstanding – from working on the latest and most interesting planning projects to entrepreneurial ventures, marketing for a world renowned classical music company, working on the corporate social responsibility of an international fashion house, and everything in between. Our alumni in Hong Kong are making a difference and proudly putting their Environment education to use daily.
I’d be remiss if I did not sincerely thank and acknowledge the support of one particular alumni – Conrad So. Conrad was instrumental in introducing us to key members of in the community, guiding us and being an incredible host. It was such a pleasure getting to know him and his family – and it warms my heart to know that we have a great friend in Conrad. Thank you!
What’s next for Hong Kong and our alumni? Well, the world is in their hands – while Hong Kong strives to become the most innovative hub in Asia, our alumni are well positioned to continue to contribute and be part of shaping Hong Kong’s story.
I’m excited to have our alumni continue to build their network through the ENVHK Facebook and LinkedIn groups. Many alumni welcomed the opportunity to connect with current students, and encouraged students to explore opportunities for co-op, internships and future employment in Hong Kong.
I’m so grateful for this life changing experience – and together, looking forward to continuing to build our HK alumni family.
