Mary Jane Patterson receiving a certificate from Dave Blake

Mary Jane Patterson exemplifies green living. From the rain barrels and recently installed air source heat pump water heater in her home to forgoing a car in favour of biking, Patterson walks the talk when it comes to reducing her environmental impact.

The executive director of Reep Green Solutions was recently presented with an Environmental Lifetime Achievement Award by Green Communities Canada, an award bestowed on individuals who have dedicated their lives to improving the environment.

Patterson’s sustainable lifestyle also informs her actions as a champion of sustainability in the community. Under her leadership, Reep Green Solutions has enabled people to lower their environmental footprints through 15,000 residential energy evaluations and 5,000 low-income retrofits. And the impact of these efforts is significant, reducing over 30,000 tonnes of CO2 in Waterloo region each year. Mary Jane was also Chair of the Board of Green Communities Canada and one of the main architects of the Region of Waterloo’s Climate Plan.

Described by her nominators, Paul Parker and Dave Blake as a dedicated and creative force that acts as a mentor to many, Patterson says it means a lot to her to receive this award.

It reminds that we're not alone and that we get to work on issues we care about every day, with people who make a difference.
