The Faculty of Environment continues to build on its status as the most graduate-intensive faculty at the University of Waterloo campus by adding another exciting PhD program to its roster.
The Sustainability Management PhD program (subject to final approval by the Quality Council) aims to train the next generation of environmental leaders with the research skills, management tools, strategies and processes required to realize sustainable outcomes within business, government and third sector organizations.
The Sustainability Management PhD program is aimed at future academic and non-academic researchers. Students will learn the main theories and concepts of sustainability management. Based on this learning they will produce sustainability management research results that are both publishable in academic outlets and have management and policy impacts.
The program offers milestone seminars on consulting, evaluation, and analysis that will prepare students for a career outside of academia, in addition to the academic courses. Furthermore, the program is interdisciplinary and focuses on problem-solving for sustainability challenges in business and development.
“Those who complete the program can continue doing research at universities and research institutes as post-docs, assistant professors or research associates, says Olaf Weber, a researcher in the Faculty of Environment, and the primary academic contact for the program. “Secondly, they might start a career in research, analysis, evaluation, and consulting in the private and public sector.”
As for what students can expect on a day-to-day basis, Weber says, “the program offers milestone seminars on consulting, evaluation, and analysis that will prepare students for a career outside of academia in addition to the academic courses. Furthermore, the program is interdisciplinary and focuses on problem solving for sustainability problems in business and development.”
