Minka: A Social Justice Conference

Minka is a Quechua word that represents the tradition of collective work on a project that benefits an entire community. It is a call to action where community members work side-by-side, bringing the expertise they have from their daily lives and placing it alongside the expertise of another. It is a culminating event where, in solidarity, people are empowered to create changes that have lasting impact on the lives they build together. During a Minka, the needs of the community are placed over the needs of the individual; everything stops when someone calls a Minka.

Fish for Thought in the Gospels

The study of fish consumption in antiquity is complex, as there is ongoing debate as to a) the degree to which ancients actually ate fish; and b) what sort of “fishy” ideologies (Beer, 2010) existed. The latter, in turn, could involve the avoidance of fish altogether, eating certain kinds, sizes or portions of fish, or raising the creatures on private fish farms. Although fishers were low on the social scale, eating fish, especially large fish, was considered a luxury.
