CTE702 Encouraging Deep Approaches to Learning through Universal Design

As instructors, we strive to provide students with the opportunity to move beyond simply memorizing what will “be on the test” and to think critically about what and how they are learning. By applying the principles of universal design, we can design instruction that not only encourages these deeper approaches to learning but, most importantly, enhances learning for all learners.  Universal design anticipates that students will have differing levels of preparedness, different literacies, diverse backgrounds, a wide range of goals, strengths, and needs.  Universal design helps to plan for this diversity and to value it, involving students in pedagogical design.

At this workshop, we will explore key concepts related to universal design and its relationship to deep approaches to learning. We will share ideas on how to apply universal design principles then conclude the workshop with an opportunity for participants to work on their own course.
