How can we determine if students are taking a deep or surface approach to their understanding of the course material we deliver?  Are our students digging deep or skimming the surface of their learning? Furthermore, how do our students know for themselves if they are developing lasting understanding of key concepts? In this workshop we will discuss some definitions of deep, surface and strategic approaches to learning as presented in the literature. We will then introduce and consider some methods and tools that can be used to effectively measure student learning.
