Every day from September 24-November 11, the names of 661,818 soldiers and nurses on all sides of the First World War killed in 1917 will be displayed at more than 60 locations around the world. The commemoration is a unique expression of remembrance, reconciliation and education, and shows the enormous human cost of the war. The Mennonite Archives of Ontario Gallery (3rd floor, Conrad Grebel University College) will be one of these display locations.

Monday, October 16, 2017 (all day) to Saturday, November 4, 2017 (all day) to Sat, 11/04/2017 (All day)

The change of seasons often brings an influenza outbreak. Although influenza activity generally peaks around January, it takes the body about two weeks after vaccination to develop antibodies that will protect against influenza virus infection. For that reason, it's important to get vaccinated before the seasonal outbreak, especially if you fall into the high-risk category. Students, staff, and faculty are invited to get their influenza vaccination through Health Services.

Composed by Carol Ann Weaver, "Songs for My Mother - from Appalachia to Africa" is a song cycle based on writings from her mother Miriam L. Weaver's pioneering life in Appalachian Kentucky in the 1940s (primitive house, flat iron, Hard Shell Baptists who met outside on the hillside), her travels to Africa, and her return to Virginia with poignant words about her sudden impending death in the 90s.

Mark Crowley

Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) allow us to learn predictive models and control policies for larger, more complex systems than ever before. However, some important real world domains such as forest wildfire spread, flooding and medical imaging present a particular challenge. They contain spatially spreading processes (SSP) where some local features change over time based on proximity in space. This talk will present new approaches to learning for SSPs using Deep Learning and Reinforcement Learning such as learning a model of wildfire spread from satellite images as if the wildfire were an agent making decisions about where to move next. This approach could lead to learning models which are more interpretable and aid domain experts in creating rich, agent-based models based on data.

Please enjoy some refreshments and meet Dr. Crowley and other attendees from 1:30 - 2:00 p.m.
