Evolution from Goldfish to Baboons: Bachelor of Knowledge Integration alumna shares her research exploring the Neanderthal question.
The first image in any textbook on human evolution shows the "progression" from chimpanzee to caveman to modern man. Research on baboons has shown that the evolution of a species is interwoven with extinctions, hybridizations, isolation, re-encounters, and many more complex interactions. Kaleigh's research explores hybridization in baboon species and applies the findings to the question of what happened to Neanderthals.
Kaleigh Eichel is a 2012 alumna of Knowledge Integration. She went on to obtain a Master of Arts in Public Issues Anthropology at the University of Waterloo, exploring the Neanderthal question. In true KI fashion, she will be making yet another discipline change into veterinary medicine after spending a summer as an intern at Shades of Hope, a wildlife rehabilitation centre.
