A constant refrain of portraying Islam, the faith of over 1.7 billion people, as different and dangerous by Islamophobes, scholars/pseudo-scholars, political commentators, and the media has influenced in growing the divide between the Muslim community and the West.

In this talk, Idrisa Pandit will examine the evolution of dichotomous relationship of Islam and free speech as presented in the academe and the media. Who gets to tell the story of Islam and Muslims? And which story are we ready to listen to, and why?

Idrisa Pandit is the Director of the Studies in Islam program at Renison University College, University of Waterloo. Idrisa is also a community activist passionate about issues of social justice, interfaith dialogue and peace building.
