Launching a Waterloo chapter of the Canadian Indigenous Science and Engineering Society

Tuesday, January 19, 2021 12:00 pm - 12:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Do you want to know what you can do to:

  • Support Indigenous students and colleagues in STEM?
  • Learn more about how Indigenous ways of knowing relate to your field?
  • Build community with colleagues who are also working on Indigenizing and decolonizing their STEM classrooms outside of UWaterloo?
  • Discover outreach activities across North America?

The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is a national, non-profit organization focused on substantially increasing the representation of American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, First Nations and other Indigenous peoples of North America in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies and careers. In Canada, .caISES (pronounced dot-see-aces) is the Canadian chapter of AISES.

At this event, the first event in 2021 for the Indigenization in STEM Community of Practice, we will hear from:

  • Lisa Paz, Senior Director of Engagement and Advocacy with AISES
  • Clayton Sockabasin, third-year Engineering student and one of the founding members of UWaterloo’s .caISES chapter
  • Claire Thompson, second-year Engineering student and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Commissioner for the Engineering Society

The presentation portion of the event will be followed by a moderated Q&A with Lisa, Clayton, and Claire to allow participants to learn more about AISES, .caISES, and the activities planned for the UWaterloo chapter.

This event will be Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at noon (12 PM EST) and will be hosted in WebEx (click here to join the WebEx event). This event is open to all University of Waterloo faculty, staff, and students (undergraduate and graduate).
