We rank everything all the time. We look for top one percent. We compete to belong to the top. And educators do encourage competition. Is ranking necessary? Why do I need to compete with others?
Observation and free inquiry are the only tools we have to understand the complexity of human life. Since ancient times, however, we have emphasized the role of thought in our investigations. Thought has replaced observation and virtually eliminated free inquiry in many domains of human life. In this seminar series, we will revisit topics such as mind, violence, ethics, freedom, learning, intelligence and education by means of observing and questioning, and not through thoughts. We will attempt to find out how perception and free inquiry, in contrast to conception and belief, can help us to find answers that are not based on ideas, opinions and dogmas.
