Join Faculty of Science and Royal Astronomical Society of Canada astronomers to learn more about the Perseids meteor shower, and see how many meteors you can spot!
Dr. Michael Balogh, Department of Physics and Astronomy, will give an introductory lecture "Space Rocks". It has been an exciting twelve months for solar system exploration, with spacecrafts visiting a comet (67p), a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt (Ceres) and a much more distant, and more famous, dwarf planet: Pluto. Dr. Balogh will talk about these and the many other rocks that make up our solar system, including the origins of the Perseid meteor shower which we hope to observe following the lecture.
The lecture will take place in OPT 347. We'll move to the Columbia Fields for stargazing after sunset.
Complementary parking will be provided for Lot X behind the Optometry building where the lecture will be taking place.
