In this talk Dr. Fayçal Saffih presents his implementations of intelligence on Silicon Photonics to realize smart CMOS Image sensors from System (chip) level, down to Circuit level and finally down to Device (semiconductor). All these bio-inspired implementations are intended to mimic biological intelligence of vision systems to answer the stringent imaging requirements in biomedical imaging, remote/wireless imaging and inspection and security imaging to name a few applications.    

In addition to his research and driven by his passion on intelligence, Dr. Saffih will present his teaching philosophy and experience in embedding intelligence in Engineering Education. He will show how to apply STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) curriculum and Artificial Intelligence to Engage and Motivate students in learning complex courses such as Microelectronics.  His novel way of teaching (PDF) was published recently at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) 124th conference in Columbus, OH, USA.

Biography

Dr. Fayçal Saffih (IEEE Member since 2000) received his B.Sc. (with Best Honors) degree in Solid-State Physics from the University of Sétif-1, Algeria, in 1996, his M.Sc. degree in Digital Neural networks from Physics Department, University of Malaya, Malaysia, in 1998, and his Ph.D. degree in Smart CMOS Imaging from Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Waterloo, Canada, in 2005. In 2006, he joined the Communication Research Laboratory, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, where he developed a versatile FPGA-based prototype for biomedical smart imaging application known as the wireless endoscopic capsule. Dr. Faycal Saffih joined Voxtel Inc., OR, USA, as Senior Analog Active Pixel Sensor engineer, designing imagers based on Silicon-On-Insulator complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (SOI-CMOS) technology for the next generation of CMOS imagers, namely, for RAD-HARD, high-energy physics detection, and electronic microscopy imaging. From 2009 until 2012, he joined KAUST as Research Fellow where incepted his invention on Smart Nano-photonic devices dedicated for imaging and solar energy harvesting. In the last 5 years, he taught microelectronics & physics courses at University of Guelph, AUM (Kuwait) and UAE University and he is currently a visiting professor at the University of Waterloo’s ECE Department.

His research focus on Artificial-Intelligence Design Engineering (AIDE) from Nano-devices to electronic systems clearly illustrated by his endeavor and publications on smart CMOS image sensors design. For more information, visit his LinkedIn profile and YouTube channel.
