This one day course will provide a high level background on vegetation inventory and monitoring in the contents of settled and developed landscapes.

It will cover some examples of vegetation inventory and monitoring from

Canada and other parts of the world. The course will specifically provide an overview of strategic, standard, and quantitative vegetation field efforts using plot based Vegetation Sampling Protocol (VSP) methods.

This classroom style, but interactive and discussion based workshop, will cover and explain plot based VSP, its key methods, tools, applications and implementation. It will also highlight and explain essential elements of successful inventory and present the VSP case studies and initiatives in southern Ontario. Additional topics covered will include: the link between inventory and monitoring; the connection between field data and mapping; sampling design; importance of quantitative data; explanation and use of VSP information; analyzing VSP inventory and monitoring data and presenting the results.

This workshop will cover the role of VSP for adaptive management, climate and land use change adaptation; VSP applications relevant to species at risk, invasive species, potential carbon market and offset opportunities, forest management, vegetation mapping, urban woodlot management and others. A brief overview of inventory planning and collaborative options with OMNR and Faculty of Forestry, University of Toronto will be also presented.

The course will be offered at a rate of $50.00 (including HST).

The registration fee includes lunch.
