Declaring a Climate Emergency: Discussion with the Climate Justice Working Group

Thursday, January 28, 2021 11:00 am - 11:00 am EST (GMT -05:00)

Inspired by the example of hundreds of universities around the world, including many in Canada, FAUW's Climate Justice Working Group has proposed that FAUW declare a climate emergency with specific commitments to accelerate the Association’s ambition on climate justice.

The proposal is made in the context of the intensifying climate crisis, the resultant widespread (in)equity consequences, and our as educators for the next generations who will be burdened by these impacts. The FAUW Board will be working with the working group to, potentially, bring a motion to the Spring General Meeting in April 2021. In making this declaration, FAUW would be aligning its own policies and operations with climate justice and, where possible, supporting faculty in doing the same in their teaching, research, and service.

The Climate Justice Working Group invites faculty to discuss what making a declaration could mean for FAUW and its members. This is not a discussion about University actions or policies, but about things that the Faculty Association itself can do.

Download the proposal for a FAUW climate emergency declaration (PDF), which includes some background information about what's happening at other universities.
