This event is open to University of Waterloo staff and faculty members that have a research interest in games and games-related technology, interactions and implications, or that are interested in learning more about The Games Institute and its current initiatives. Come see our research facilities, learn about our work, and get to know the other grad students and faculty members involved in The Games Institute. Faculty members are encouraged to bring graduate students under their supervision that have games-related research interests.

The Games Institute is proud to present our first collaboration with the University of Waterloo Women's Centre.

On Wednesday, November 22nd from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, join us for a night of games, conversation, prizes, and engaging conversation surrounding women in geek culture. Using an intersectional, feminist lens we will discuss representation in games, cosplay, graphic novels, and everything "geek" culture.

Join Gina Hara, IMMERSe contributor from Concordia's TAG Lab, for a screening and discussion of her documentary film Geek Girls, shown as part of the Grand River Film Festival. 

Geek Girls reveals the hidden half of nerd culture; a world of cute dresses, professional gamers, fake names and death threats. In the first feature-length documentary about ‘geeky’ women, filmmaker Gina Hara goes on a journey to discover the trials and tribulations of high achieving women in the international world of comics, games, anime and ‘cosplaying’, revealing previously untold stories and what it means to be a true Geek.
