SUMMARY:Student Speaker Series: Speech in Human-Agent Interaction with Nima
 \nZargham
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Due to technological advancements\, communicating with computer
systems\nusing natural language has become a casual phenomenon. Speech-ba
sed\nsystems\, like Siri or Cortana\, have become widely popular among peo
ple\ndue to their convenience. Speech interaction encompasses a social\nco
mponent as it reflects the fundamental human capacity for\ncommunication a
nd enables interpersonal engagement through verbal\nexchange. This makes h
uman-agent interaction an essential topic of\nresearch in the field of hum
 an-computer interaction.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Research and Epistemology - a discussion
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:How should we conduct research in cooperation and partnership w
ith\nIndigenous communities? What does it mean for Indigenous scholars and
\nstudents to do research within the colonial structures and settler\nepis
temologies of Western universities? The panelists\, consisting of\nIndigen
ous students and researchers as well as settlers working with\nand for Ind
igenous communities\, will share their perspectives and\nexperiences on th
ese questions. They will begin a conversation to help\nus consider these a
nd other issues related to Indigeneity in the\ncontext of Western academic
cultures and practices\, and invite\nquestions and discussion to develop
our capacity to Indigenize\nresearch and scholarship.

SUMMARY:Just Relationships for Research Panel
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:We are increasingly asked to envision and implement respectful
and\nnon-extractive research involving marginalized communities. But we ar
e\nrarely challenged to bring those principles to bear in our own\nresearc
h groups\, where asymmetries of institutional power between\ncolleagues\,
students\, and staff are normalized. This interdisciplinary\npanel will di
scuss how to foster and maintain just relationships among\nresearchers\, w
ith a focus on the principles and practices animating\nnon-extractive stud

SUMMARY:Panel on Designing for Disability and Accessibility
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual panel with three researchers about their
work\nand research in Accessibility in Digital Games and Virtual Reality.\
nThe panel will include Triskal deHaven\, Dr. Katta Spiel\, and Dr.\nCayle
y McArthur. Triskal deHaven will lead the panel with frequently\nasked que
stions about Virtual Reality and Accessibility\, research\nstudies within
higher level education\, and some of the gaps in\nAccessibility that stude
nts could pursue. Students are encouraged to\nask their own questions abou

SUMMARY:Researching Disability and Play - Where's the fun in that?
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Games research is slowly diversifying in matters of representat
ion as\nwell as accessibility related investigations. Similarly\, a materi
alist\nand embodied understanding of play (also digitally) seeps in more o
n a\ntheoretical basis. However\, we need to critically examine what kind
of\nbodies are invited to participate in play and how. Where games and\npl
ay are mostly conceptualized as entertainment for the majority of\nbodies\
, disabled people are often relegated to playing for\n externally motivat
ed purposes that are often driven by deficit\noriented medical models of d
isability. Using the theory on the\nsurrogate body in play\, they illustr
ate how it can be instrumental to\ncritically engage with norms governing
digital play and identifying\ndesign opportunities playing with said bodil
y norms to holistically\ncater to disabled audiences. They do so by focus
ing on the critical\nanalytical category of disability not just through an
access oriented\nlens per se\, but rather to bring principles of disabili
 ty justice to\nplay.
