Lim Geomatics builds geospatial software and data that helps forestry companies streamline their forest management and harvesting operations resulting in massive cost savings.

In a short pitch, how would you describe Lim Geomatics' offerings (products and services)? What makes them innovative? What industry sectors and/or customers are you focused on?

Lim Geomatics develops geospatial software products for forestry companies to help them be more efficient with their forest management and planning activities, and harvest operations. Our software-as-a-service (SaaS) products are innovative and industry-leading as they leverage the geography inherent in data to bring new actionable insights to foresters in support of sustainable forest management. Our forestry customers and clients include the largest integrated forest products companies, real estate investment trusts (REITs) and timber management organizations (TIMOs) in the Americas.

Providing more detail, what is the value proposition of Lim Geomatics' offerings? Examples could include the underlying technology, new capabilities, cost reduction, risk reduction, improved performance, new business model, etc.

Lim Geomatics has developed the Forestry Geospatial Platform. To us, a platform does not mean a virtual machine (VM) running in the cloud, but instead an ecosystem of web- and mobile-based apps that each focus on solving a specific business problem and work seamlessly together. We built such a platform for foresters and there is nothing else like it in the market. For example, our platform technology allows a forester to collect field data in remote locations, hit a “sync” button, and make this data available immediately to other foresters who can use our other web apps to run advanced data analytics.

What is Lim Geomatics' biggest achievement/success story to date?

Our biggest success story is that Lim Geomatics was able to successfully commercialize scientific research developed in academia to build a company that after 16 years in business, continues to grow and scale, with customers found all over the world. Being named one of Canada’s 2021 fastest growing companies by the Globe and Mail helps validate that we are doing something right.

What does the future hold for Lim Geomatics?

In its early days, Lim Geomatics was viewed as an outsider to forestry and a company that did not understand the needs of the forest sector. We like to think that we were ahead of the times and certainly with the explosive growth in the company over the last few years, without question, we have product market fit for our geospatial SaaS products. Now it is all about executing our business strategy to support the scale-up of the company. As we look towards the future, Lim Geomatics will continue to expand its forestry geospatial platform and invest in R&D activities related to digital twins.

What is Lim Geomatics' connection to the University of Waterloo?

Our connection to the University of Waterloo is through Lim Geomatics’ people. Our CEO Dr. Kevin Lim completed his Master of Environmental Studies (MES) degree in the Department of Geography in 2000 and in one of his earlier startups, had hired a few UW co-op students to help build out a MVP. Several Lim Geomatics employees also obtained their undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Waterloo.

Why did Lim Geomatics decide to join the GEDI Exchange? What are you looking for? What do you want to get out of it?

Lim Geomatics has had the privilege to be involved with many networks over the years. These include the Ontario Centres of Excellence, GEOIDE Network of Centres of Excellence, TECTERRA, Invest Ottawa, and Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster, and without question, being associated with one or more networks has helped Lim Geomatics succeed. The networking opportunities that are offered by the GEDI Exchange is what is the most appealing to Lim Geomatics. You just never know who you are going to meet and more importantly, when that time comes where you need help, and entrepreneurs know that time will come, instead of having one or two people to fall back on for help, having a network or even network of networks of professionals to call upon can be the winning factor.
