SUMMARY:The Urgency of Social Justice Speaker Series part 1
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:LAURA MAE LINDO: UNCOVERING THE RACIAL CONTRACT: A STORY OF BIL
 L 67 IN\nONTARIO\n\nIn December 2021\, Bill 67\, the Racial Equity in the
Education System\nAct\, was tabled to ensure educators in Ontario were pr
ovided with the\ntools that they need to uphold their legal obligation as
laid out\nthrough Ontario's Education Act: to build inclusive classrooms.
While\ntabling the Bill was a response to community advocacy demanding th
at\nschools become anti-racist spaces - spaces that encourage and support\
nracial equity qua praxis - what ensued raised questions as to the\nrole\,
purpose\, and vision not only for education in Ontario but also\nfor the
type of advocacy expected from public officials. This is that\nstory. \n\

SUMMARY:Social Justice Wednesdays - Virtual Talk with Dr. Kim Hong Nguyen
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:DR. KIM HONG NGUYEN (COMMUNICATION ARTS) PRESENTS MEAN GIRL FEM
INISM:\nWHITE FEMINIST OUTRAGE AND SALVATION\n\nFrom the Bitch Manifesto t
o the movie _Mean Girls_ and the popularity\nof the mean girl trope\, the
right to be mean is the new frontier for\nwhite feminist discontent. My wo
rk explores how feminism points to\ngender as if it is resistance in and o
f itself. Feminist discourses\nhave positioned the white heterosexual mean
girl/woman as both the\nprimary problem to patriarchy and the antidote wi
thout whom patriarchy\ncannot be remade. I argue that the white mean girl
feminist is the\nidealistic figure of complaint and the white hetero-patri
archal mark\nof bourgeois feminist maturity. In this presentation\, I will
share a\nbrief overview of this book project.
