Biography 

Dr. Saied Pirasteh is a guest collaborator Research Scientist with the Mobile Sensing and Geodata Analytics Lab at the University of Waterloo. He is also the UN-GGIM Academic Network Member at the United Nations, sharing knowledge toward implementing sustainable development goals (SDGs) 2030. His research skills are in multi-disciplinary in applied Remote Sensing and GIS applications of Geo-environmental issues, climate change, natural hazards, and disaster management. He also does research and development of related algorithms, models, mobile and web applications. Saied received his second Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Management specialised in Advanced LiDAR Remote Sensing, GIS technologies and Geoanalytics from the University of Waterloo Canada.

He obtained his B.Sc. degree in Geology in 1998, M.Sc. degree in Applied Geology (specializing in Remote Sensing in 2000, and Ph.D. degree in Geology (specializing in Remote Sensing and GIS) in 2004 from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), India. Dr. Pirasteh was an instructor at Chamran University in 2000 to 2002. He joined at IAU, Dezful University, Iran in 2002. He was also a visiting faculty of Khorramshahr Marine Technology University, Khorramshahr, Iran. He was an adjunct and fellow at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand from 2005-2007. Later, he became a representative of the AIT in the Middle East till 2008. From July 2008 to September 2011 he was a Senior Researcher and Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Advanced Technology (ITMA) at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Malaysia. He has supervised 14 Ph.D. and M.Sc. students.

He is recipient of Young Scientists Award, Outstanding Researcher Award, Outstanding Teaching Award, ANKASA Malaysia Best Paper Award and the Outstanding Awarded for paper presentation in the International Conferences. He is author/co-author of more than 150 publications in refereed journals, conference proceedings, book chapters, books. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the International Geoinformatics Research and Development Journal (IGRDJ); and the founder of the International Association of Geo-information and Communication Technologies (GeoICT), as well as International Conference on the Geo-information Technologies for Natural Disaster Management (GiT4NDM). He has been working very hard internationally to develop Geo-information solutions, and connecting people in the field of natural hazards as well as Earth and Environmental Sustainability to save the Earth with informed solutions. Saied has been collaborating and consulting in industry for 17 years. He developed more than $4 million grants and projects to connect academic and industry in an applicable form. Dr. Pirasteh is able to communicate in four languages.

He joined the University of Waterloo, Canada as a visiting scholar in December 2011 and started to pursue his Ph.D. degree in Geography in September 2013 and completed his PhD thesis in January 2018. His current research interests are multi-disciplinarily in applied geology, hydrology, geoenvironmental mapping and modeling, Remote Sensing and GIS, surveying, geodata analytics, natural hazards, LiDAR mapping, and digital image processing.
