The University of Toronto is hosting a national colloquium bringing together undergraduate German studies students from across Canada together for a day of scholarly exchange. Organized by Ulrike Kugler (Goethe-Institut, Toronto), Christine Lehleiter (University of Toronto), and Paul M. Malone and Barbara Schmenk (University of Waterloo), students from six different universities will be presenting their scholarship:

  • Contrasting manuscripts: underlying differences paving the way for new perspectives - Anna Kamoulina (University of Toronto)
  • Radical Redefinition - John M. Evjen (University of Alberta)
  • A treacherous narrative perspective: the mediation of trauma in Kafka’s “Ein Hungerkuenstler” - Ella Wilhelm (University of Toronto)
  • Die Darstellung der Neuen Frau - Madison Cleary (University of Toronto)
  • Identity and the complexity of guilt in World War II in postmodern representations - Esther Hein (University of Winnipeg)
  • The role of memory in Germany and the memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe - Virginia Shewfelt (Memorial University)
  • Not just sausages and beer. The demise of the traditional German diet and why Germany has the highest number of obese citizens in the European Union - Ray Illsley (University of Victoria, BC)

The colloquium is sponsored by the Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures at the University of Toronto, the Goethe-Institut, the Munk School of Global Affairs, and the Waterloo Centre of German Studies.
