Up until 1916, Kitchener was known by another name - Berlin. But with the advent of the First World War and the rise of anti-German sentiment, citizens agitated for a name change.
Join us for a panel discussion with local historian rych mills and University of Waterloo professors Goeoffrey Hayes (History) and Mat Schulze (German). Moderated by Carl Zehr, former mayor of Kitchener, the panel will speak to the controversy that surrounded the plebiscite and eventual choice of a new name for the largely German-speaking city.
Hosted by the Waterloo Centre for German Studies.
