Joint MA in Intercultural German Studies

Picture of Katharina Scholl

Where and what did you study before you came to Germanic and Slavic Studies at University of Waterloo?

I did my BA in German studies and Media and Communication science at the University of Mannheim.

What are your interests in German Studies?

I am mostly interested in literature and film studies, and how both literature and film reflect on social and cultural concepts or ways of thinking.

Why did you choose University of Waterloo?

UW has a great reputation – but to be honest, I think the reports of the previous IcGS students about the great and personal atmosphere at the GSS department convinced me the most to come here.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose this program because it combines literary, cultural and linguistic studies. Whatever you’re interested in – this program gives you the opportunity to do research in many different directions. In addition, studying abroad really intrigued me not only because of professional but also personal growth.

Do you already know what you want to write your thesis on?

Not yet.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a zookeeper or a private detective, because I read way too many detective stories (probably still do).

What is something people wouldn’t guess about you?

I’ve been a vegetarian for more than half of my life.
