Kim Burnett completed the University of Waterloo's PhD program in Global Governance at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in 2017.

Dissertation Title: Navigating the Land Between Religions: New Perspectives on the Fair Trade and Food Sovereignty Movement Strategies to Challenge International Trade Governance

Her SSHRC funded research focused on the governance of agricultural production and trade, analyzing the role of social movements in political change through an examination of the fair trade and food sovereignty movements, identifying their strategies to influence institutions and policies governing global food and agricultural trade. Kim worked in the private, public and non-profit sectors prior to her graduate studies, was a research fellow with Oxfam America in 2009, and has held contracts as an independent consultant with several international development organizations and the United Nations.
