GSA President 2018-2019

Short Description

The President is the Chief Executive Officer of the Graduate Student Association. Within the scope of the corporate bylaws and policies, the President has full operational control and responsibility for the Association, including budgeting and spending. The President is an ex-officio member of the Board, and as such is a fiduciary. The President works twenty to thirty hours per week and historically has been compensated at the current TA rate.

Our goal is to be a diverse workforce that is representative, at all job levels, of the graduate students we serve. We have a Human Rights policy, and we welcome all backgrounds and perspectives. Also, there is precedent for this position being held by international graduate students studying in Canada on a study permit or similar.

About the Graduate Student Association

The Graduate Student Association was established in 1972. We provide a health and dental plan, a bus pass, and a social club, the Graduate House, and we represent graduate students to all levels of government.

The Association has a bi-cameral governance system. The Board has fiduciary responsibility for the Association and oversees all aspects of its governance and operations. The Board supervises the President, and the President supervises the rest of the staff. The Council provides direction on the mission of the Association and determines the Association’s political positions. The President works closely with the Council to keep the Association’s operations current and relevant.

Core Accountabilities

  • Operates the Association according to corporate bylaws and policy
  • Interprets and operationalizes Board policy
  • Ensures that the Association’s operations are directed towards the following objectives:
    • Every graduate student at the University of Waterloo has an overall positive social and academic experience
    • Graduate students and their interests are represented and promoted in the university community
    • Individual graduate students receive assistance with specific problems they face in the university community
    • Graduate students at the University of Waterloo are in social, intellectual, and political contact
    • Every graduate student at the University of Waterloo has good physical and mental health
  • Ensures that the Association’s operations comply with Board-specified limitations and Council-specified political positions
  • Reports on policy compliance according to the Board’s monitoring schedule
  • Works closely with the General Manager to maintain operational continuity, effective operations, and policy compliance

Training and Support

The successful applicant will be invited to participate in the Board Bootcamp in late April, an intensive, one-day training session on corporate governance. The President will be required to complete the University of Waterloo’s CORE Leadership program during the Spring 2018 term. Additional training will be made available throughout the year as required.

The General Manager, a full-time, regular position, functions as a Chief of Staff to the President and helps to transform the President’s directions into operational activity.

Application Process

The Presidential Nominating Committee considers applicants and nominates a candidate for election. The Board and the Council jointly elect the President.

Applications should include a cover letter and resume, and are due by 12 am (midnight) on Sunday, March 18, 2018. Interviews will be held during business hours or in the early evening between March 26 and 28. The nominee will be required to attend, in person or electronically, the meeting of the Council on April 11, and the meeting of the Board on April 18.
