1. I still don't get it, what is a Peace Camp?

Peace Camp is a week long summer camp for youth aged 11-14 who have a passion, or even an interest, in social justice. At peace camp, youth learn about working for peace in their homes, schools, and communities. We do activities with built-in lessons about resolving conflict, listen to stories from people from various backgrounds (such as a holocaust survivor and a nuclear scientist), and doing some volunteering work with organizations in the community. Part of our focus is on hearing both sides of the story, and creating a safe place for everyone to share and to learn together.

2. Is this a religious camp?

At Peace Camp, we recognize that you cannot discuss peace without having some religious elements come up. However, we do not have any specific religious connection, and encourage people of all religious, and non-religious backgrounds to participate. We like exploring the elements of peace that come out of different religions, and try to keep the focus of the conversation on peace.

3.What happens at Peace Camp?

At Peace Camp, we try to encourage learning by creating a fun, safe space for youth to ask questions, listen, play, and discover. We play games that teach conflict resolution skills. We listen to stories from people who have experience working in a wide variety of peace related disciplines. We go on field trips to learn how to work for peace in our community by working with the people we want to help. Overall, we learn how to work for peace in our communities, schools, and homes, while still enjoying typical fun camp games and activities.

4. What kind of speakers come to Peace Camp?

At Peace Camp we are creating a positive space for everyone to share their stories and opinions safely. The speakers who have come to Peace Camp before have come from very different backgrounds and have felt welcomed by the youth and the space created at peace camp. In the past, we have heard from holocaust survivors, nuclear scientists, and a yogi.

5. What is Peace Camp doing to try to reach out to youth who wouldn't normally have the chance to go to camp?

Peace Camp is making an effort to reach youth who don't always have the chance to go to summer camp in two different ways. We are offering a low cost summer program as well as bursary programs for families that need it. We are also making an effort to have all of our camp activities accessible to all youth, even those with disabilities. Our inclusions facilitator works to make sure that all youth feel included in our camp activities.

7. Is Peace Camp going to be like summer school?

Not at all! While we do spend some time listening to stories from speakers, we spend most of our time playing games, making crafts, and doing fun summer camp activities. Most of the lessons learned by youth at Peace Camp are learned through these games and activities, not by spending long periods of time listening to someone talking. We understand that it's the summer break, and so we want to give youth the chance to have fun!

8. What will I get out of Peace Camp?

Youth can look forward to learning more about how to work for peace in their homes, schools, and community. They will get an understanding of what peace in our local community means, and how to work towards it in a positive, collaborative way. They will also make lasting friendships with the other campers.

9. What are Peace Camp Field Trips?

Campers can look forward to some field trip opportunities during Peace Camp. During these field trips, campers get the chance to learn about and work with organizations that are working for peace in the Waterloo Region. On these trips, campers get to learn what these organizations do, what others can do to get involved, and then on some trips they will have the chance to work alongside the organization.
