Contract Position:  Food Services Assistant

  1. Qualifications
    1. Preference will be given to persons who have experience and/or training in a variety of food service tasks.
    2. Ability to stand for several hours at a time
    3. Ability to relate to a wide range of people, especially students
    4. Ability to work safely with kitchen equipment
    5. Awareness of health and safety standards and procedures for dietary facilities
    6. Must be able to communicate in English
  2. Role - Nature and Scope
    1. Working together with the CGUC food services staff, under the direction of the Food Services Manager, the food services assistant is required to perform a variety of tasks within the department, including: dishwashing, floor cleaning, bag lunch making, preparing vegetables and fruits, and cleaning dining room.
  3. Specific Duties
    1. performing dishwashing routines (clearing, sorting, rinsing, washing using the dishwasher or manually at pot sink, putting away)
    2. preparing items for salad bar and setting up salad bar prior to meal service
    3. preparing fruit tray, fruit salad, fresh or canned fruit for lunches
    4. preparing vegetable, fruit or cheese trays for functions
    5. preparing bag lunches
    6. preparing deli bar items
    7. refilling items in serving line
    8. assisting cooks with preparing items for lunches and suppers
    9. putting food away and cleaning up cafeteria serving line
    10. assisting with setting up and cleaning up special functions
    11. sweeping and mopping kitchen floors
    12. vacuuming dining room floor and wiping tables
    13. performing routine housekeeping tasks within the kitchen and dining room
  4. Salary and Benefits
    1. The salary will be commensurate with experience, training and community salaries for a similar position.  Starting wage is $18.29 per hour. Benefits will be equal to those paid by the University of Waterloo for a similar position.
  5. Hours
    1. This position is defined as a contract, part time, averaging 6-10 shifts per 2 week schedule. Must be able to work a variety of shifts including weekends and holidays.  Shifts Monday to Friday are 6:30 am to 12:30 or 2:30 pm or 12 noon to 8 pm.  Weekend shifts are 10 am to 7 pm.  Actual hours may vary depending on workload and scheduled events. Assistants typically work 1 weekend, Saturday and Sunday, per month.  Period of employment is August 2019 to May 2020.  There is a possibility this could become a permanent position in 2020.
  6. Accountability and Reporting
    1. Food services assistants report to and are accountable to the Food Services Manager.
