The Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement (CPA) is located at Conrad Grebel University College at the University of Waterloo. In 2020-2021, as part of its commitment to advancing peace by promoting collaboration among its peace partners, the CPA is running Map the System – an annual global pitch competition – for the third year in a row. This position is also considered to be an Incubator Fellow role (an opportunity to support the CPA’s incubator program and to learn about the intersecting fields of social innovation and peacebuilding) and, as such, will be resourced through the Barry Bauman Mentorship Fund.

Map the System is a global competition that challenges students to think differently about social and environmental change. Participants must use ‘systems thinking’ as a guiding approach to understanding complex social and environmental challenges. The goal is to create systems maps as a means to articulate their findings in a way that people can meaningfully understand, share, and learn fromkey skillsets for those interested in creating systemic and sustainable social or environmental change.

As Campus Lead, you will be working closely with the Director and Coordinator to implement the Map the System competition at the University of Waterloo. Your tasks will include on-campus promotion, organizing student engagement opportunities, and providing continued support as students progress through competition milestones.

Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Promote Map the System competition to students on-campus (e.g. in-classroom discussions, faculty outreach, on-campus signage)
  • Coordinate on-campus information sessions, networking opportunities and skill-building workshops
  • Oversee registration process and track student participation to ensure timely communication of important information and deadlines
  • Provide continued guidance on competition requirements
  • Facilitate connections between students with similar interests
  • Connect students with subject matter experts on campus / in the community and make available resources that will enrich their research 

Accountability and Reporting

This role is accountable to the Director of the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement at Conrad Grebel University College. For specific responsibilities and tasks it will require a close working relationship with—and regular supervision by—the CPA Coordinator. The Human Resources Manager of the College is responsible to deal with matters related to contract, benefits, work space, and equipment.

Characteristics, Qualifications, and Expectations

The successful applicant will have the following:

  • Support for and understanding of the vision and mission of the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement and Conrad Grebel University College.
  • Strong understanding of systems thinking and passion for systems change
  • Experience organizing and executing events
  • Experience organizing and executing outreach efforts aimed at engaging students and faculty
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, and time manage with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, responding to opportunities as they arise.
  • Creativity, good judgment, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills, including the ability to work productively and collegially with a diverse group of students and professionals.
  • Previous knowledge/understanding of Map the System competition

Compensation and Benefits

This position begins on October 5, 2020 and ends April 16, 2021. The hourly rate is $15.71 plus 4% vacation pay for 168 hours of work. While this averages to 6 hours/week of work, we expect the Campus Lead to map and manage their time according to the competition’s timeline. We expect the Campus Lead to split their weekly hours across at least 2 days/week.

Context & Work Environment

Conrad Grebel University College is affiliated with, and is situated on the campus of, the University of Waterloo and is home to the Theological Studies, Music and Peace and Conflict Studies departments. Grebel also has a residence which houses 142 Waterloo students a term in a dynamic community.

The Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement is home to a variety of participants involved in the work of advancing peace. CPA participants include University of Waterloo faculty and Masters students, as well as peace-oriented entrepreneurs and established organizations from the region's vibrant peacebuilding field. Participants in the CPA recognize the value of collaborative, inter-disciplinary, and multi-sector approaches to the advancement of peace.

This position will be remote for the duration of Fall 2020, though the Map the System Campus Lead will be expected to be present in Waterloo for some in-person tasks throughout Winter 2021 if university and Government of Ontario protocol approves a safe return to in-person engagement on campus.

When on campus, the Map the System Campus Lead will be working in our Incubator space, surrounded by social innovators and peacebuilders. The environment is collaborative, bright, and friendly. Your desk will be in an open room.
