Dr. Sofia Samatar, professor of literature at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, will be our next Bechtel Lecture Series guest. As a writer of fantasy literature, she has an intersesting personal story as a woman of Swiss Mennonite-Somali descent. Her personal identity as a mixed Mennonite intersects with her writing and thinking about literature.
In addition to a public leture, she will offer a writers' worshop to our resident students and other interested individuals. More information will be available closer to the event date.
Dr. Sofia Samatar
Sofia Samatar is the author of the novels A Stranger in Olondria and The Winged Histories, the short story collection, Tender, and Monster Portraits, a collaboration with her brother, the artist Del Samatar. Her work has won several awards, including the World Fantasy Award. She teaches African literature, Arabic literature, and speculative fiction at James Madison University.
